I am a 'fan' of David Douglas, if you can be a fan of a long-deceased naturalist; I have read his journals and a number of biographies. He is a fascinating figure. I was excited to get this book for my daughter, who is 9, and who I have regaled with tales and stories of Mr. Douglas' life and accomplishments. This is definitely above her reading level, I'd say appropriate for an accomplished middle-school reader or up. That said, the book is well written and despite multiple narrative points of view maintains focus and continuity. Ms. Anderson is a fine author, I'd actually say better than she has to be for youth fiction judging by other writings for a similar audience. . I have been reading the book to my daughter rather than her reading it herself, but I don't think she is getting everything out of it I would wish for, but we have a nice time together and her sock monkey asks many questions.
