The daughter of famed jazz pianist Joe Albany recounts a childhood marked by music, drugs and thwarted potential in this impressive debut. Albany's hipster pedigree is impeccable: her mother was fresh off an affair with Beat poet Allen Ginsberg ("I gather Mom was Ginsberg's last heterosexual liaison") when she married musician Joe Albany, a troubled heroin addict credited as one of the inventors of bebop. Amy Jo was born early in the doomed marriage; by the time she was five, her mother had disappeared and the preschooler was living with her father in the St. Francis, a colorful flophouse in Hollywood ("like Eloise without the frills"). Young Albany became a fixture in the L.A. jazz scene, accompanying her father to the smoky bars and clubs where he performed. In addition to jazz legends such as Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker, Albany's girlhood was populated with a nearly unbelievable cast of one-eyed junkies, dwarfs and the inevitable hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold; each of these down-and-out figures is nuanced character rather than a cliche. The daughter of jazz pianist Joe Albany, a key figure in the birth of bebop, exposes the seamy world of Hollywood in the 1960s and 1970s while spinning a pathetic tale of growing up as the child of addicted parents. When A. J. is five her mother deserts, and father and daughter take up residence in the St. Francis Hotel on Hollywood Boulevard. In poignant staccato chapters, the author evokes vivid portraits of her fellow residents, a "vast assortment of misfits" including a baby-sitter "who did a lot of mescaline," a cook-companion who was a transvestite and an addict himself, and her friend LaPrez, son of a "strung-out hooker" who disappears after his mother overdoses. Joe's friendships with Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong, and Sinatra are all part of the mix, but so is Dalton, the porno moviemaker who introduces A. J. to speed. A. J. is seduced by an uncle at 12, attempts suicide at 14, and eventually gives up trying to save her father, who dies alone in 1988. Writing doesn't get any better than this, as the daughter of the late jazz pianist Joe Albany recalls her often harrowing childhood. Amy Jo was "raised" by her father, often strung out on heroin and scuffling for work, after her mother split the scene early on. How she survived is a miracle, as we are introduced to a host of bizarre and/or unstable personages who flitted in and out of her and her father's lives. The book runs only about 161 pages in hardcover, and A.J. Albany paints the picture in one or two page sketches that you can't help but reread and cherish not just for their shock value but also for the philosophy of life that kept an unusually mature for her age little girl functioning and coping despite it all. Highly recommended, and now I look forward to seeing the recently released film based on the book, with John Hawkes, Elle Fanning, Lena Headey, Glenn Close, and Peter Dinklage. Quite a cast, and one that I hope does justice to this superb book.

This book was recommended to me when I was complaining about my jazz musician parents, their unbalanced, often drug addicted parenting, growing up in L.A. around musical celebrity, and some of the more tragic effects it had on my life. After reading AJ Albany's intense and intelligently written recollections of the insanity that surrounded her as a child of a jazz musician, in brief, I'll just shut up about my childhood that now seems like living in Disneyland by comparison. AJ Albany has been able to distance herself from what must be some extremely painful memories to create magnificent, finely descriptive and detailed accounts of her childhood days, surviving in the seedy streets of Hollywood with it's all too colorful characters. Her memoirs will be interesting to anyone who grew up around Los Angeles in the late 60's-early 70's and certainly for anyone who is a fan of classic jazz. AJ Albany has forever earned the title as given to her by her father, Joe Albany, "Be-bop Princess," and she is a brilliant writer. This book was a page-turner and when I reached the end, I wanted more.

"Low down:Junk, Jazz, and Other Dairy Tales from Childhood" is a memoir by the daughter of a famous jazz musician, a heroin addict with various mental disorders. Her childhood on the slummy side of Hollywood among addicts, prostitutes, sexual deviants is not a fairy tale with a happy ending. Despite a life of neglect, being abandoned by her mother, who also was an heroin addict, being raised by her addict father, A.J.J. Albany (Amy Albany) had a deep love and respect for her father, valued his musical genius and as a nine year old tried to help and protect him. Though this autobiographical history of childhood neglect and suffering occurred during the 20th century, it mirrors the suffering of children in a Charles Dickens' novel. Albany's memoir is brief, about 132 pages, but it's written with style, wit, and heart. More important, it depicts the power of a human being to triumph over a disdavantaged youth.

This one slipped my most of us. LOW DOWN, Junk, Jazz, and Other Fairy Tales From Childhood by A. J. Albany. The author's father was Joe Albany, a legendary jazz pianist who played with some of the greats. The author is his daughter and the hardships she faced growing up with drug addict are really eye opening. This book is very short, a collection of vignettes really. Heart wrenching and amazing. Take the short time necessary to read this one. RECOMMENDED

Having been friends with Joe Albany, I find this book by his daughter Amy to be an evocative, truthful, and fair portrait of the man and his music. It is uncanny how much she makes him seem alive. It is like being reunited with a loved one. So also are A.J.'s recollections of Hollywood of the late 60's early 70's both lovely and frightening, vividly recreating the atmosphere and ambience of a time and place. I know how much Joe loved his daughter. She returns a lot of that love to us in this book. Of course I have personal reasons for loving this book. But even if you've never heard of Joe Albany, this book has much to offer anyone who loves jazz, who loves Hollywood, who loves the human spirit.

cant add more to what others have said except I didn't want the book to end when it did.i wanted to read more.by the way the movie was pretty good too.i grew up in the same era in some of the same locations so it rang very true and home to me.

Such a personal, sad and vivid memory of a sliver of time. Joe Albany was a unique, gentle and talented musician, his wife Sheila a fragile, flawed and beautiful woman. Amy Jo has inherited much of the abundant talent from all sides in her ability to transform the pain into a mature insightful memoir.

I read this book when it was first published and although it is hard to remember all of the details, I cannot forget the undeniable strength of the author, the painful emotions dictated so perfectly they were palpable, and the resilient joy that brought this book to life. The author is unforgiving in her recount of life as a child of an addict jazz musician. I felt deeply connected to this book, excited by the history--learning so much about my hometown of Los Angeles many years before I was born. Definitely recommend!
