Emerson, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel, is the author of Chevrons, a detailed book on U.S. Army insignia, and a member of many collectors organizations. This massive reference book is intended for researchers, historians, collectors, dealers, and curators. It covers insignia and uniforms of the U.S. Army from 1782 to the present. Before insignia became common, the design of the uniform was especially important in identifying nationality and branch of service. Thus, one-third of this book is devoted to the study of uniforms, and two-thirds covers insignia. The book is divided into 22 sections and 80 chapters that are arranged to allow the identification of like objects (e.g., section 8, Musician's Insignias; chapter 13, "Lyres"; chapter 14, "Bugles, Horns, and Trumpets"). Coverage includes all branches of the army and everything from field clothing to dress uniforms. Insignia and uniforms for chaplins, medical personnel, foreign units, Indians, and women are covered in detail. The text is profusely illustrated with more than 2,000 black-and-white photographs and occasional line drawings. The illustrations are appropriately placed throughout the text and frequently show the items being worn. In an appendix is a well-illustrated seven-page essay on insignia fasteners. The bibliography has 249 listings for books, government documents, periodicals, and catalogs. Also assisting users is a nine-page index with appropriate see and see also references. Italic designations for illustrations in the index are hard to distinguish from regular type.The only comparable work is the much smaller Military Dress of North America, 1665^-1970 by Windro (Scribner, 1973). It contains approximately 100 color and line drawings and 100 black-and-white photographs. Approximately one-third of that book is devoted to coverage of pre-Revolutionary armies in North America. Except for this small time period, Emerson is far more extensive in coverage and detail. Academic, public, and special libraries will want to consider this excellent book for their collections.

I have to say this book has an extremely wide and indepth range of coverage in uniforms and insignia. The photos are entirely black and white but quite detailed and are well explained for each photo ( figure ) in side tabs. Most of the book is grouped by jobs or specialty such as Cavalry, Inspector General, Coastal Artillery, General Staff etc and collar brass and insiginia relating to said specialty and the changes made over the years.. There is much switching required from the index in the back to the page refered to if your looking for item specific like Rank, Badge or helmet eagles since the items are listed through out the book and chapters. The size is large and there can be nothing taken away from the enormous amounts of information that has been gathered into one Book. It Covers early militaria through modern times. If your looking for a " I dont like to read" type book and need full of color pictures but little else then this isnt for you. If you are a beginner collector, a Militaria history buff or an advanced collector... you need this book in your library collection.

Not really what I needed but it has a whole lot of information in it.

This volume is indispensable for those who collect militaria, or for those whose interest lies in military history. I collect military uniforms and insignia, and it answers those questions that I had concerning when a certain device was changed, or when a uniform change took place. Lots of information in this large volume.

Excellent reference, fast ship, fair price.

I would venture to say this is a pretty complete book. I was looking for certain specific things, which turned out to be included so I was happy with the purchase. I can't imagine anything was left out, though, so I would recommend it for anyone looking for a really good reference.

This has been on my wish list for years and years. It is one of the most outstanding works on this subject that you can have. It covers a vast amount of historical time. I am very pleased with this book and this will help me in research on the Army.
