We really enjoyed using this guide on our two week trip through Israel. The information was very thorough and we learned a lot. We were happy with many of the restaurant recommendations. My only suggestion would be to call locations before you go to ensure the closing times are accurate (particularly on the Sabbath). On two occasions, we were disappointed to discover that some of the sites closed earlier than the listed time. Otherwise, it was a great guide.
I recently returned from a trip to Israel and was very disappointed in Fodor's Israel. First off, I will say that I am probably not Fodor's target audience. I tend to be a very budget conscious traveler. Fodor's covers budget to expensive, meaning one or two listing for each price category. Based on the internet I know there are many more options, which have better reviews. Budget travels might be better off with another guide.On the plus side, the book looks great! It has lots of pictures and engaging layouts. Looking through the book before the trip it heightened the anticipation. It is also great for showing other people what Israel is like.For the negatives, I found the layout frustrating when looking for specific information. For example, information about Nazareth is found on the page for lower Galilee, the spread about Jesus in Galilee, and the section on Nazareth. On several occasions I remembered reading something, but had to dig through many pages to find the details because it was in a special spread and not in the section for that town. Another example, the map of the stations of the cross is on p76, but the description of the stations is on p63-64. It was difficult to walk through the Old City, trying to read two different pages with the book in one hand and a camera in the other hand.As stated by another reviewer the maps are largely useless. Many street names are not marked and frequently the transliteration was different in the book than on the street sign (we could usually figure it out, but it required trying to pronounce the names, not just matching letters--difficult when driving with a line of cars behind you).I was also surprised at the amount of data out of date for a book published in 2009. For example in Haifa, Jacko's Downtown location has closed (I don't know when it closed, but the building has been wiped clean and we confirmed with our hotel it had closed). Some prices had also changed quite a bit (One example, Petra is listed at JD21, it is currently JD33, and will be increasing later this year to JD50!).The bottom line is that Fodor's was not a good match for my travel style (rental car, independent, budget). I'll stick with LP and Rough Guide in the future.
If you want to enjoy half a vacation, try doing your own research on the Internet, attempting to separate the wheat from the chaff. If you want to enjoy all of a vacation, buy a travel book written by people who all know what they're talking about. Whether it's Fodor's or another series that speaks better to you, buy a Kindle edition and have the key info you really need with you, instead of discovering that the person who claimed this restaurant at which you are currently suffering was JUST THE BEST EVER! must apparently view McDonalds as high cuisine.
I bought this guidebook for a recent trip to Israel and in general, I was satisfied. One thing that buyers should know about this book is that it definitely goes more in depth into Christian sites and places than Jewish ones. So if you're a Christian traveler, you're going to find this book to be very helpful for you. For the Jewish traveler, this guide is a little thin. It was annoying to me that many of the restaurants they recommended weren't kosher (is that really so much to ask in Israel of all places?) and that they didn't always indicate whether a restaurant was kosher or not. I could never trust their recommendation because I didn't want to go all the way out to a restaurant just to find out I couldn't eat there.
We usually use Rick Steves series for traveling to Europe. Unfortunately he doesn't have a travel guide covering Israel. Comparing to what we used to find in his publications, this book lacks details. It's just a nice "all over the place" description, not a travel guide to suggest a good walking tour in the city, how to commute between the places or a good restaurant for a lunch.
Our first trip to Israel and prior to going read this book everyday. It is extremely informative, well laid out, and very easy to read. Now I know where to get the best ice cream, what to wear on my feet at the Dead Sea, and where not to go on certain days and times. There are many maps.in full color. All in all, a great companion guide and I highly recommend.
Bought this for our trip to Israel this summer. Was moderately happy with the content, although it seemed a little sparse sometimes. Also, the flow of the text is interrupted with multicolored "features" which do provide some nice information but make navigation of the book difficult in key areas (like Jerusalem and the Galilee).But then I happened to pick up a friend's 2010 edition of the Lonely Planet book on Israel and the Palestinian Territories, and there discovered what I was missing. It has at least twice as much information as Fodor's. It has lists of food vocabulary and lots of info on what to eat where. It has great summaries of history and politics for even small sites. It includes more sites in a more readable format (sure the margins are smaller and there's no color, but that's totally secondary!) And the maps are somehow clearer and more functional too. I'm super bummed I didn't go with this book at the start, but with two weeks left of my time in Israel, I'm going to make the best of the Lonely Planet now!
This travel guide spends a lot of time covering lodgings and food, with not enough coverage of the historical sites and things to do in Israel. Some people might be looking for that information, but I find that food and lodging recommendations are really easy to find online--it's the cultural and site-oriented information that I buy the guide book for. Also, the whole book feels a little piecemeal--doesn't feel like a very comprehensive view of the country.
