Hands down one of the best books out there for anyone interested in film directing.Working with actors can often seem confusing or scary. and even for those who take many workshops and classes about working with actors it can still feel like there is this big divide between the director's mind and the actor's mind. This book helps greatly to clear that all up. with in-depth step by step and common sense looks at the actor's ( and director's ) craft this book helps to lift the haze and guide you to being a director actors will be excited to work with. For actors this book provides a wonderful look at how hard a director's craft can be when it comes to acting alone. How a director has to balance multiple actors to reach a balance in a scene. It also helps clear the air and make sense of where confusing or just bad direction.
Great book to help directors learn to motivate actors and get the responses they want, and understand how to read a script. If you are an actor, there is a lot of great info here as well. Geared for film acting, some of the techniques need to be modified to work for the stage, but the principles are the same. Some of the critics of the book talk about it being outdated. Although people may be developing new techniques, that doesn't mean that old techniques no longer work. The goal remains the same: to create an exciting and believable performance.
Many filmmakers especially student filmmaker are afraid of working with actors, so they often you friends and the result is a bad film that looks great. We all know that getting a good performance is key to good filmmaking os how do filmmakers learn how to work with actors. READ Judith Weston;s Directing actors. This is the go to book to what not to do with actors, give them results oriented direction, and how to talk to actors, how actors think and how to direct them. If nothing else any filmmaker that reads the first chapter Result direction and quick fixes, will never make the same mistakes again. After reading this book, filmmakers will get over their fear and lean to enjoy the process of directing,
Though the book is officially aimed at film directors, and their need to understand how to direct actors, there is far more in this book. It offers both directors and actors a great deal of help, looks at the various approaches to acting (including the Method and such) and offers many helpful suggestions and techniques for all kinds of situations that arise for actors, and between directors and actors.Having done a little directing and some acting as well, I really enjoyed this, and found it helpful in ways to think about any future work I do in these areas.
I have been acting in theater and film since I was a kid but I didn't really understand what acting was until I read this book. Weston is enjoyable to read and deeply wise about the actor's process and human behavior in general. DA is packed with vital information for the actor or director, and while it will take several re-reads and much real practice before I fully integrate all of the techniques presented here, there are many things I can adapt immediately to significantly improve another's performance or my own performance in a role or my performance in life.
I'm actually a professional actor, getting into directing. (I've become interested in directing after being on sets with directors who don't know how to communicate to me what they want me to do.) And as an actor, please, please, please read this book before approaching an actor for the first time - I can't tell you how much easier it makes my job!Reading this improved my acting AND my directing. In conjunction with The Charisma Myth (Olivia Fox Cabane) and The Actor and the Target (Declan Donnellan), this is a must-have for any director's or actor's bag.
I have Stu Maschwitz's DV Rebel's Guide and this was a book that he recommends in hisI produce several local television commercials. I got into the production side because I was tired of seeing the garbage that passes for local production and wanted to up the standard. Unfortunately, in a small market, professional acting talent is rare. This book has been a great help. Using the techniques in this book, I've been able to get great performances from non-professional actors and actresses (and often better performances than I could have gotten from a professional). If you do any directing at all, this book is a must-have.
This book isn't just for directors. It is an invaluable resource for actors as well. I've taught film and video acting for a number of years and never found a book that was worth having students read even part of. Until this one. Unlike most books on acting which focus on techniques that may work great on stage but are worse than disastrous on film, Judith Weston goes under the surface of acting and directing to the core of what a close-up camera needs to see. That, in a nutshell, is "lending the character your unconscious," so that absolutely nothing looks (or is) fake or "pretend." Even more importantly, she provides down-to-earth, extremely effective techniques for directors that support and demand genuine, affect-free performances. She discusses the creative process of the director at a level that is not idiosycratic or based on her personal "style" (as so many books for directors and actors do). Her advice is both common-sensical and deeply insightful, it's what every good director knows but often can't articulate consistently enough. Don't miss this book if you work in film or video, whether you are a director, actor, teacher, editor, DP, AD, or even a gaffer. After reading Weston, you will see every aspect of the actors performances more truly and clearly, and find yourself finding new ways to get the most out of every second on screen. One of those books that changes your life by telling you what you already knew more clearly than you ever thought it could be said, and giving you fresh new ways to put it into practical use. Highest recommendation.
