I just purchased this book and I must say I could not be happier with by decision.. I have spent years "wood shedding" scales and they almost never end up in my playing.. The problem of course is that scales are not music - they are the resources we need to make music. This book shows you how to incorporate various diatonic and exotic (altered) scales into real life playing situations. It also includes a number of backing tracks for each scale type which provides different harmonic treatments that allow you to hear the scales in context - thus the name of the book.. The examples played by Pete Sklaroff are executed with flawless technique and beautiful tone.. This book is a winner.. A great collaboration by 2 world class musicians..
As an intermediate guitar player I have found this book to be exactly what it is describes as being. A practical reference guide about guitar scales. Guitar Scales in Context is a reference guide providing you with backing tracks and licks for 18 guitar scales and modes. There is also a breakdown showing you 5 different most used positions of the scale. The information is presented in a format to allow you to get an understanding of chord changes to use and what style of music to use each scale with. Some knowledge of the guitar basics is best. Reading tab is necessary.
Excellent book on scales, using them is various harmonic situations. I wasted a lot of time using the Grimoire series - wish I tried something else more musical sooner. For me this was that book, general format is to introduce a scale, then a few exercises to get you familiar with "skiping" around that scale and it's various shapes. The backing tracks are great for putting on your phone and jamming to or listening to the examples when you can't play.This book doesn't use the "3-per string shredmaster" wannabe scale forms, but the more caged-like ones. I think the more vertical arrangement of notes lends itself to a more musical sound as well.
For the most part okay. Every scale is in C, so you have to transpose. But since it's mainly about learning the patterns of a scale, transposing isn't that big a deal. Still, the book would be better if it covered other keys. And the chord diagrams for accompanying are tiny, and the position notes next to the chord diagram are so small you need a magnifying glass to read them, and I'm not exaggerating.
This book might be alright for someone who has a fair amount of experience playing guitar.I'm just entering the intermediate stage and starting to learn scales....which I am, but I wanted to learn how to apply and have fun with scales without sounding robotic. I thought this book would help, but it just doesn't go in to enough detail. Very confusing!
This book has all the modal scales plus the synthetic scales (half/whole tone, whole/whole tone). Each scale is represented in its 5 caged parts, and in each cage the chord that harmonizes is highlighted. I assume that most guitarists, even beginners, know the Ionian Major scale; that being said, there is so much information in this book that I decided to pick two scales to memorize: Dorian for a minor sound and the Half/Whole Tone scale for a classic recognizable jazz sound that has a repetitious pattern for easier memorization and use. I was so impressed with this book that I have since bought several more of J. Alexander's guitar instruction books, and they are all worth every cent. I only wish he had a set of beginner instructional books for jazz piano...
This book helped me to integrate scales, triads and arpeggios in every mode and apply them into useful licks and music I play; the concepts are easy to grasp and explained in a way that makes sense. The book really helps improve and support learning music theory but it is only as good as the time and effort you practice.
This is a good introduction to the purpose and function of scales along with practical exercises to help you navigate the scale positions on the neck. The author laid out a very discreet and usable practice routine that can easily be replicated for each new exercise. I guess there is room for debate about the speed you should practice or other advice presented in the book, but pretty much everything about guitar is subjective, able to be debated, and there is no single answer for anything, except your mileage may vary. This book is designed to provide the framework underpinning the function and use of scales, and in that context it is a very good book.
