I just got done reading the whole Ultimate Guide to Linking book. I didn't think it would be fair to review without reading the whole thing. I bought this book because it had high reviews. Joost de Valk, the Yoast SEO guy, promoted the book. "Read it twice" he said... Joost even wrote a section in one of the last couple of chapters.I have to start with the negative as this was what I felt through most of the book. This wasn't an easy read. Most of the time I felt like I was reading an out of touch academic book. There's not a lot of practical hands on instruction; do this, do that. I started this book excited. Chapter 1 went by. I thought, "OK! It's an intro! He's building up to some good advice!" Chapter 2, much of the same. I thought, "That's fine, it's a big book! Gotta build up to it!" Chapter 3 and 4 went by. By chapter 5, I realized that the book was going to be that way. I just forced myself to press on. Quite a lot of the tools/websites mentioned are things you need to pay for. The middle of the book is good up until Chapter 24 until the end. Chapter 24 was about link building lessons from 6 SEO dudes you probably don't know. I got the feeling most of them were just writing as an advertisement for their own businesses. The last of those 6 SEOs was Mike Grehan. That dude wrote 13 of the most boring pages in this book. What he said can all be summarized in a paragraph that you might actually remember. "The rich get richer, so start getting rich so you can get richer!" Or, get a lot of links, then you'll start naturally getting more links! Finally, Chapter 25... written by Jon Cooper. It had a few good pieces of advice. I was very turned off by how much he spammed his webpage. It's a chapter basically begging for you to visit his site as he throws his URL at the end of almost every paragraph. It does have some ok advice here and there, but man... The book DID have a few good chapters consistently. It's almost like this book was written by 2 separate people, and it was! I just wonder who wrote what. I hope it was Eric who wrote the middle to end sections. Now for the positive. There's good advice here, it just comes late. I forced myself to push on through the whole book, and i'm glad I did. Chapter 15-23 was good. It changed my view of how backlinking should work. There's just no easy way to say it. It's all about emailing people and asking them to link to your content. The authors show how they have done that through the years. Note that this is a pure white hat linking book. For a book so thick, I thought it would at least cover more gray / black hat link building strategies, at least the good ones anyway.I think the book could have been condensed. It would have been nice to have Eric do a walk through of something like an example campaign. I'm still not even 100% sure what a link campaign is! Writing down all of the link prospects and keywords or something? The book didn't define it before it started talking about it. This book is like a steak with lots of fat and bone that needs to be cut. It's got good stuff, just hard to get it.
Unbelievable link-building insight by the Jedi Master of link building himself - Eric Ward. Loved it and appreciated it. Only complaint is Garrett French's writing style is very difficult to understand. It was like chewing sawdust. But the intelligence in this book regarding link building is astounding so it is worth it. A must-read for anyone who wants to raise their page rank, strengthen relationships, increase website visibility and authority and better optimize for SEO.
As a young CEO I am always looking for ways to do SEO and Marketing by myself instead of paying a company to do so. This book has allowed me to start link building on my website. The best part about it is I have already started to see a noticeable increase in views and sales from reading this book. Overall I would recommend this book. IT is a great read for anyone starting their own business!
Link building is the most important yet hardest part of SEO (Search Engine Optimizations). The authors have done a great service by publishing a "how to" book on link building. While not easy, this is a critical part of successful SEO. I highly recommend this book to all my students, especially those who have mastered the basics of "on page" SEO and gotten the "easy" links.
This book is loaded with ideas and methods for creating links to your site that can not only get it ranked in the SERPS but can also generate a huge volume of traffic from related sites in your market or industry. It's not quite the ultimate guide though because while Eric and Garrett walk you thru their processes for effective link building there are pieces or thought processes not thoroughly explained. Parts of the book reveal methods at a high level and then leave it up to the reader figure out how to apply them. Granted every market, niche, and industry are unique thus requiring different approaches, vocabulary, and assets. However it would've been extremely helpful to have 5-10 consistent examples throughout the book of major markets so the differences in approach and application of link building methods was more clear. Even without the examples though the book is excellent and a must read for anyone looking to rank their site in the SERPS and drive a lot of non-paid traffic.
Excellent book about the correct (and safe) way to position your site in search engines like Google. Must read if your business needs more Internet leads and sales.
This book is just as viable as it was three years ago when I bought it. How many other SEO books can say the same? None that I have found yet.
Lots of great information and ideas for link-building. I use this constantly in my career, especially chapters 24 and 25.
