I think there's alot of potential in Grace Burrowes. But she's not quite there. I just discovered her, started w/ the Virtuoso, went to The Heir, and just finished The Soldier. MUCH to like about her writing. The camaraderie b/w brothers is nice, even though laughably unlikely in the physical affection they display w/ each other. But, hey, I'm a realist who willingly suspends disbelief if the story has good characterizations, and above all humor. GB does write with alot of good humor. That's her best feature. I like that the heroines do good work to support themselves, whatever they can do, like cook, or hire out as household staff, or put their gardening skills to good use. Her heroines are intelligent. It's distressing that they don't have the gift of critical thinking, so they can actually help extricate themselves from whatever the cris du jour is. I kind of like her formula of bringing previous characters in to the plot of the new book, the characters of very likable. But, too often, the plots get twisted, and doesn't really makes a lot of sense. Mostly because whatever the issue is could have been handled with some good sense, or at least a better sense of self preservation. And while the heroines are strong characters, the author is not true to them when she has them teeter totter between pretty decent strength, and god awful melodrama. And I absolutely can't abide the type of love scene where someone says "we can't do this.........we mustn't it's wrong........let me go now, but first kiss me (!!!!!!!). To me this has always smacked of the "no doesn't really mean no" syndrome, which makes me angry. GB has the building blocks to rise above the norm here. Well, to be accurate, the bar is so low on what is offered in romance publishing these days, that GB HAS risen above it. But not far enough. I'll read a few more of her books, maybe the latest ones. I'm hoping for some realized potential

I read this book when it was 1st released in 2011. I loved it then, and love it even more now. I've read all her historical romances (not a huge fan of anything contemporary ). Devlin has always had a special place for me, but the joy of reading this again now is seeing some of the supporting characters again after having read their stories (Val, David & Hadrian) and knowing just what happiness lay in store for them.

When I read The Heir, I became very interested in the two brothers, Devlin St. Just and Valentine, so I was anxious to read Devlin's story. I was also a bit trepidatious since I really wanted to like it and I hoped it finished stronger than the first book in the trilogy (which I'd initially felt was a 4-5 star read, but ended up at 3 stars).I am so glad and relieved because for me, it did. What's a bit surprising about that is some of the things that diminished my feelings about the Heir were also in evidence here: I think this book could also have been shortened/tightened up; plus, once again the heroine seemed to cling overly long to what amounted to unnecessary road blocks to her potential happiness with the hero. But in this case, I didn't feel there was an aspect of sheer stupidity/idiocy in the heroine's rationale and stubbornness.Another quibble that carried over - the ending seems quite abrupt when it comes. I wanted more. But perhaps the author's feeling is that "more" will come in the third book of the trilogy (Valentine's story).All that said, this story resonated for me. Devlin is such a lovely, flawed, wounded but brave and tender soul. I loved the plentiful glimpses we got into that softer, vulnerable side - certainly in his relationships with Emmie and Winnie, but also with his brother Val and in his burgeoning relationship with Amery. It isn't often we get to see the loving, caring bonds among men - that was a great carry-over from the first book.This was an emotionally satisfying way to spend time, and I like the thought of Devlin, Emmie and Winnie building on their family unit and becoming closer to Dev's larger family. Hopefully we'll get a glimpse in Val's story.

This novel will grip your heart and cause you to care so deeply about men of war and their battered souls. It does a wonderful job of relaying just how devastating it is to young people who must endure the insanities of conflict. Our heroine has her own obstacles to overcome, and Ms. Burrowes has done a masterful bit of writing that conveys their ability to soldier on.

I loved the characters, especially getting a fuller look at Devlin St. Just. Winnie was rotten, but adorable, too. I enjoyed some of her 6 year old antics. Most of the time I wanted to shake Emmie, though, if I’m honest. While I really enjoyed the story for the most part, I’m a little puzzled by the ending. It seems terribly abrupt and I can’t help but wonder if somehow an epilogue was accidentally left out of the Kindle version.

I read this because I was pleasantly surprised by Lady Maggie's Secret. If you liked Maggie, you won't like this. There is no action or intrigue in this story, so move along if that is your taste - it is a lot of talking about the same thing over and over (his PTSD) and there is an incredible number of super sensitive males hugging and sharing and crying with each other. I could not understand why the heroine does not just marry the hero and be done with the apple tarts and super humanly sensitive men less than halfway through the book. She is neurotic and emotional and, quite frankly, I lost complete patience/sympathy with her, not to mention I felt that she was using sex as as tool over the hero. The latter is debatable, but you can see the depths of my respect for her. The big flaw with this story is that the author does not sufficiently focus on the heroine's troubles so you don't understand why she's acting like a neurotic psycho that you would not want to be friends with much less root for. This is not to say I won't read others in this saga. I did really like the Lady Maggie story. Go get that one.
