"Windows into the Earth" was directly recommend to me by naturalists while my family was traveling in Yellowstone National Park recently. When park naturalists recommend a book/author, I listen. Purchased the book from Amazon right away and am so glad I did. My husband and I are Yellowstone geeks (we travel and hike in the park regularly) and were originally looking for a good book on the geology of the place that would be thorough and rigorous yet "readable" for we amateur geologists. "Windows into the Earth" is exactly that! The writing is scientific in nature, clear and concise, without being too stuffy. Considering my husband and I are reading this book aloud to each other while traveling, you can get a good idea of the writing style. "Windows into the Earth" is a beautiful book, too, brimming with illustrations, photos, charts, drawings. It also points interested readers toward more resources for study, and provides a fascinating "region by region" roadside geology travelogue one can use when visiting in Yellowstone and Grand Teton parks. For a good basic understanding of Yellowstone geology, I highly recommend "Windows into the Earth".

Excellent book written by a geologist and a federal worker. The book is well written, lots of photos and diagrams that help the reader understand the underlying hotspot that is Yellowstone. Once you review the fact that plate tectonics and magma coming to the surface are the driving forces at work in Yellowstone, it helps to know where to look for things (such as the edges of the caldara), what to look for (acidic v. base eruptions) and why do we care? I have multiple graduate degrees and I found this book both helpful and engaging. Anyone interested in this area can get a lot of good information prior to going to Yellowstone. I do research in the area and I found it immensely useful. Don't be afraid to wade into the realm of geology. geophysics, and volcanism. Yellowstone is in fact a super volcano that will eventually erupt again. It is nice to know the timeline of events and what to expect, should that happen. Highly recommend.

What an awesome resource!!! I was planning my first trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. I didn't want to waste my time piling in and out of busses packed with other tourists, straining ears to hear tour guides rambling on and on. I also didn't want to drive aimlessly from location to location, saying "ooh" taking pictures of random stuff without understanding what I was even looking at. I bought this book several months before our trip and learned a LOT about the geology of the region. The information was interesting, thorough and clear; you don't need any prior education in Geology to follow the book. About a month before our vacation, I got nervous and bought 3 other travel guides (I was afraid this book would be too difficult to use each day). During our vacation, we kept this book in the car with us and read the descriptions before getting out of the car at each stop. We followed the suggested tour of the Tetons (did it in 2 days so we wouldn't have to rush) and found it extremely helpful. We used a combination of this and 2 other books to plan our Yellowstone adventure because there is just so much to see!!If I had it to do all over again, I would still have read this book before going (since returning I am re-reading it), would still have used it to plan our day trips, and would still have kept it in the car with us. My only frustration is that the maps are not very good to use in or around the 2 parks. Invest in an auto-tour guide or maybe use the maps you get at the park entrance stations, but DEFINITELY get this book if you want to understand what you are seeing.

The first chapter is well organized. From there, the book falls into a quagmire of jumbled facts and repetitive information. Whole paragraphs get recycled over and over. Much of the information is flung at you in a rather chaotic fashion. It felt as though I were reading a rough draft of a grade C research paper. The final chapters offering tours was more coherent. The whole book should have used a similar layout. Unfortunately, the graphics a useless and illegible on the Kindle version. If you buy the book for the tours, buy a print copy. Overall, this was Avery disappointing book.

Extremely well written and engaging. This book not only provides really solid information about the geological "whys" around Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, but also an inviting narrative that captures the imagination and a list of sites for visitors to the park to consider. I have spent many hours in these parks over my lifetime, but having access to this information made my last trip there (July of 2017) truly memorable! I cannot thank the author enough for "Heart of the Caldera" recommendation - a great stop that I have always driven right past!

This book arrived in excellent condition and before the estimated arrival date. I would order again. I have not read it yet, as I plan a trip to Yellowstone Park in the summer and I want to read it shortly before I go. I am interested in learning more about the geology of the region, and it looks like this will be a helpful resource.

I agree with the many people who loved this book, but I want to address the reviews that complained about repetition. That approach allows people to read any chapter and find all relevant information in that spot, without having to start at the beginning and read chapters they are not interested in.

Yellowstone is such an amazing place; there are few places on earth where you can see the earth breathing, but this is definitely one. The multiple geothermal sites in Yellowstone are amazing to look at. But to get an in depth understanding of why there are geysers, or colorful pools, this book can answer those questions in depth. If you want to be a better informed tourist when going to Yellowstone this book will provide in depth geological information you may be looking for Tours of Yellowstone & Grand Tetons are at the back of the book which describes, site by site, geological phenomena.
