CURTIS C. THOMAS served as pastor of several Baptist churches in the central Arkansas area before recently retiring after forty-four years in the ministry. Most recently, he served fourteen years as executive pastor of The Bible Church in Little Rock. He has coauthored two books: Romans: An Interpretive Outline and The Five Points of Calvinism: Defined, Defended, Documented. John MacArthur is the pastor-teacher of Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, where he has served since 1969. I am in the process of reading this book at present. Because of its rich devotional style, I am intentionally reading it slowly so as to thoroughly benefit from the grace3 and wisdom of the author's decades of ministry experience. I have already sent a volume to a young pastor new to the ministry.

THIS WAS A GIFT FOR MY SON AND HE REALLY LIKE THIS BOOK. IT WAS ONE OF THE BOOKS HE WANTED AND WAS VERY HAPPY THAT HE GOT IT.

good book, i would recommend.

This book was given to me as a gift for Christmas, from my father. Little did I realize how much I would like this book too. Even though I received the paperback, since I did not have a Kindle yet, I have highlighted a lot in the book, to reference later on.I began reading Practical Wisdom For Pastors on Saturday morning, June 26th during both of our flights from New York to Kansas. Sunday I did not read, but did finish the book over Monday and Tuesday and I think the total time it took to read 272 pages of this book was approximately 8 hours, which is probably the fastest I've ever read a book too.I hope that many seminarians will consider having this book in their library and one that will be easily accessible and referred to often. This book would especially be helpful for those seminarians that are preparing for an internship within a local church too.My only regret is that I didn't read this book sooner because I've been serving as a pastoral intern since January 2010. I'm glad I have it now and look forward to reading some of the other books that are recommended by the author.

This is a must for ministers starting out in ministry. It deals with a lot of subjects that you deal with in ministry. From preaching to counseling to how you dress, it deals with most things inexperienced pastors don't know about. Great book. Highly recommend.

I used this book as a resource when writing a term paper, and it was great! It is also a good resource for pastors, ministers and evangelist who are going into ministry.

I just want to thank the author. I have personally experienced pastor's insensitivities of one of Korean presbyterian congregation in Huntsville Alabama. He is the only one to be preaching and afraid someone who knows more than he does. Calling him brother is insult to him. Calling Plymouth Brethren church cult because he is threatened by his only pastorship unlike biblical model of plurality of elders (pastors). He is not listening to congregation although he is not well read. Listening to only his supporters to stay on the job. Most of the time pastors are imported outside and his desires and finishing seminary qualify for pastorship instead of congregation and other five things mention in the book. It's time to check psycological condition of pastors like we do check astronauts.

I love this book. I read it when it first came out as a library book, and it helped me with little beauty hacks that doubled my tips as a cocktail waitress. A great starter read for those who want to learn the system. ;)Beyond that, it boasts some interesting studies and science-backed tricks, though it's NOT an instruction manual. Use it to guide your research further (disclaimer: I'm SUPER into biological anthropology. A very fun read that digests quickly.I heartily recommend it to any woman (though men would benefit from reading it too).

Contrary to what many people think there are certain features of the human body and face that have always been considered attractive, in all cultures. That is, beauty is not an invention of the media any more than cuteness is an invention of Disney (Bambi, the movie, exploited our instinctive judgements of what is cute). Neither is beauty merely in the eye of the beholder. Yet, having said that, both the media and the perceiver matters, just not as much as people tend to think.In this book Nancy Etcoff from Harvard University provides a fast paced, thoroughly researched, rich and enjoyable account of attractiveness. She provides answers to all the main questions that usually come up when attractiveness is discussed. Here is a non exhaustive list, which the basic answerQ: What is attractive?A: Averageness, symmetry, Big eyes (women), large cheekbones (men)Q: When did people start to care so much about their appearance?A: Since the dawn of timeQ: Are we nicer to more attractive individualsA: YesQ: Why are certain traits considered attractive?A: Because they are indicators of underlying qualities, such as health or fertilityThese are rough answers, and there are many important and interesting details which cannot be covered in a short review such as this. Thankfully, Etcoff goes into full detail, and even though I am sort of a minor expert on attractiveness (have published a couple of studies on memory biases associated with attractiveness), I learned many things from this book. Etcoff’s style of writing is reminiscent of Steven Pinker. Both are masters when it comes to referencing a ton of literature from very divergent sources (books, TV-shows, published articles, archeological findings, poetry etc), in a short amount of text, without affecting the flow of that text. In fact Etcoff made such an impression on me that I am almost certain to buy her next book (if she writes one), independent of what that book is about.

Nancy Etcoff presents her research in a clear and engaging way. This book is even more relevant today with eating disorder hysteria (if media causes it, why don’t we all have them?) and the “self-esteem” movement, which is just another way to disempower women. And the chapter on primate genitalia is hilarious, plus full of fun facts to share at parties during a lull in conversation.

This book let me finally come to terms with beauty as something all humans are attracted to as an evolutionary necessity. That beautiful people have a societal advatage is a given but just means the rest of us must work a bit harder. Having beauty alone is rarely enough though; one has to apply one's talents and intellect to compete in the world and to contribute successfully. This book has been well researched and the author has approached the subject in a friendly manner.

This is definitely a book that gets you thinking. I have read it multiple times and finally had to buy a copy to keep.

This is a pretty decent book but not extraordinary. It brings together many of the current observations relating to beauty (especially the female variety) but is not overly scientific -- i.e., it doesn't get bogged down in technicalities or jargon. Similarly, it relies on a Darwinian framework for interpretation but is not overly adamant about ev-psych's ability to explain everything about human behavior. I especially liked the first chapter, which reads more like an essay on beauty past and present than an intro to a science book.If there was any complaint, it was that the author wasn't daring enough and doesn't introduce any really breathtakingly new ideas. I got the impression she was mainly reporting on others' research, and I think Etcoff missed (in the next-to-last chapter) the interesting fact that in the last decade (or so) fashion seems to have flowed from the lower classes upwards, whereas throughout the rest of history it's been the other way, which is sort of what she presumes to still be the case. This doesn't detract seriously from the earlier material, which showed a touch more originality of approach. An interesting topic pretty well-covered, even if not ground-breaking in any way.

I'm not sure where all of the 5 start ratings are coming from, honestly. The was very little world building, and that small amount was delivered in info floors rather than through story telling. There was zero character development, perhaps due to the author's choice of a novella rather than an actual novel. The relationships between the characters were two dimensional and boring. The dialogue read as stilted without natural pacing or inflection although I think the goal was formality, which it failed to achieve. The saving Grace's were the interesting plot and editing. I don't care enough about the characters or story to read anything else in this series, or even by this author, really.

Suggest waiting to buy this work until it is finished! This writing is a Dragon Adventure. Upon reaching the last word, there is no end, so it cannot be termed a story. There is also no romance. There is a lead female and supporting male character, but relationship building is nonexistent. I did enjoy this introduction to a potential story, so 2 stars. I am very disappointed in the cost to read a partial writing enterprise. Was it Shakespeare that said every story should have a satisfying beginning, middle and end? This lacks all of those. None the less, I truly enjoy most of this authors works, and hope she finishes well.

Ok how does this have so many 5 star reviews??? After 4 chapters I returned it for my money back. The word building and overall character interaction is awful! An elementary schooler could write better! Definitely not worth the price. Maybe 0.99 but NOT $4.99. Look elsewhere.

This starts to read like a self-insert romance/power fantasy that got out of hand by about twenty or thirty pages in.In the beginning of the book we find the MC is apparently an extremely self-sufficient and self-assured individual which would help set the stage for the "Fish out of water" theme to follow but we aren't really given enough time to let that settle before the aforementioned "F.O.O.W." theme aggressively kicks in and immediately we begin to hit very cheesy, obvious, borderline clumsy Romance novel tropes and it's easy to see where this story will lead without buying the sequel, which, in my opinion, much like this book is somewhat overpriced considering the rather smaller than average page counts. Short and sweet can work, it just doesn't here. The whole book feels rushed like the author couldn't wait to get to the juicy bits and didn't want to take the time to settle the base story first.The MC is almost immediately OP and isn't given time to grow into her new found power, things happen at such a rapid pace you just kind of have to suspend your disbelief and roll with it for good or ill. Very much an "And we're walking" kind of tone there... Some "Slice of life" or just straight up filler is sorely missed.On the plus side if "Female Power Fantasy" with a side helping of "Reverse Harem" and "Oh, yeah, Dragons" are things you are into then hey, you're in luck. If you read a lot of romance novels then not much of this will surprise you.This is pretty much identical to all the male power fantasy books coming out except it's a lady and not a dude who is repeatedly given more and more powerful abilities and skills before being placed in contrived situations that allow for said skills and abilities to be shown off...I will say the world building that is present is very good, very interesting, (I might steal some for a D&D character someday lol...) there is a distinct kernel of great fantasy here.And the characters that are given enough time to make an impression are fairly well done... MC is pretty likable too so there's that I suppose...All in all though, unless you are specifically after one of the previously mentioned tropes and don't care how you get it then I'd go ahead and pass. Your money is better spent elsewhere.

This is a good book, it's not poorly written and what you get is an interesting book. That being said, this book needs more conflict. It gives the impression that Trin has been through hardships and grown a lot as a character, but this all happens before the book even starts. Instead we get introduced to an interesting set of characters in an interesting world, but the plot has almost no conflict with Trin always in a plesant mood after a warning or a few words, she always wins in a few paragraphs.That being adressed, if you want something light hearted and an easy read, this is for you. The characters are likeable, the plot is decent, and the book doesn't have any writen, plot, or format errors that may be a turn off in other books like this.

Trin was born just before her mother died. She was raised in an orphanage. She has grown up and has friends across several species. Good friends. In an effort to protect one of these friends, she confronts what she then learns is a dragon. No problem right? The dragon starts an attack. Then to her surprise, she turns into a BIG dragon. But with the attack over, she doesn't know how to turn back.This book book is about how Trin copes with that new life. It is fast paced and informative. This is the Dragon society. Come learn with Trin how to function in this life. She will not give up her old friends. Dragons beware. Here she comes.This book would be a good read from young teens up. I liked it so much that I have read it multiple times and still enjoy it each time. I can't wait for the sequel.

Viola Grace is a master of compelling shapeshifter storylines with just a touch of humor. She creates strong female characters that overcome family circumstances and personal tragedies to achieve happiness. I like that her characters aren't the most beautiful, in fact they often carry scars, but they prove their worth through talent, skill, hard work and determination. Negative events are conveyed with a matter of fact sense of pragmatism that never gets angsty, and dares you to pity them.I highly recommend all of her series. So if you haven't already tried her Sector Guard, Terran Times, Brace for Humanity, etc, go check them out!

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center The First Lady’s Legacy BOUNDARIES: Mopac Expy. (TX 1), LaCrosse Ave. DISTANCE: 2.2 miles (to complete all the trails) DIFFICULTY: Easy PARKING: At the center and on LaCrosse Ave. PUBLIC TRANSIT: None The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is a whole lot more than its name implies, though the name is probably better branding than something like the Ecological Research and Design and Plant Conservation Center. Wildflower center experts provided advice after the Blanco River floods of 2016; invented the trademarked SkySystem, a soil made from recycled materials for green roofs; and of course continue to develop ecological roadsides, continuing the work set in motion by Lady Bird Johnson’s crowning achievement, the Highway Beautification Act, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015. Johnson’s best-known quote is rendered in metal at the entrance: “My special cause, the one that alerts my interest and quickens the pace of my life, is to preserve the wildflowers and native plants that define the regions of our land―to encourage and promote their use in appropriate areas, and thus help pass on to generations in waiting the quiet joys and satisfactions I have known since my childhood.” The gardens, buildings, and café have a gentle Zen-like charm, and it would be easy to let a couple of hours fly by in quiet appreciation of all that is on offer. But beware: you may find yourself drawn Alice-like down a rabbit hole of enthusiasm for Texas’s native plants. On a practical note, bring a hat and sunscreen, especially if you plan to complete the longer hikes, where there is little shade. Walk Description The center allows for all levels of interaction. You can pop in to smell the flowers, visit the store, and enjoy a cup of coffee in the café, or you could immerse yourself in guided tours and classes in drawing and botany. The grounds are helpful to those who want to learn more about the native flora, as they are arranged as a series of microenvironments that include savanna, woodland, and a host of tiny examples of different types of gardens. It’s a small Disneyland of natural Texas, which we can divide into four areas: the Central Complex, the Central Gardens, the garden trail, and two longer trails of about a mile each that explore the managed areas and wildlands that make up the rest of these 300 or so acres on the plain between Slaughter and Bear Creeks. From the parking lot you walk up a gravel path to a payment kiosk through scrub that obscures the buildings before you. The grand entrance is revealed when you reach the kiosk. A wide stone path leads to an arch by a pond. The lovely buildings, in what I would call modern Tuscan monastic, are by Overland Partners and are designed to reflect regional architecture. They manage to be at once a little austere and welcoming, as befits an institution whose main purpose is education. Sandstone arches reflect Texas’s Spanish heritage; limestone buildings, the classic German Hill Country style; and tin roofs and barns, the modern era. Through the arch is the Central Complex, where you will find the gift shop and café and a hall dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Johnson. Beyond this rectangular courtyard are the Central Gardens that are the center’s heart. Everything is labeled, and plants are set out in 23 themed gardens that demonstrate the enormous variety of flora in the state and provide inspiration for your own garden. Keep going, and you pass through the Pollinator Habitat Garden and onto the trail that leads to the Luci and Ian Family Garden, which was added in 2014 as a place where families can interact with nature. This path winds back to the Central Complex, and you can also explore two longer loops, the Woodland Trail and the Savanna Meadow Trail. Cross the main area between the Central Complex and the Central Gardens to find the entrance to the longer trails. The John Barr Trail is a short loop that connects to the nearly mile-long Restoration Research Trail. If you have time for only one trail, choose the Mollie Steves Zachry Arboretum, where you will find examples of many common Texas trees. At last you will be able to distinguish a live oak from a cedar elm! I can’t recommend the wildflower center highly enough, whether you want a peaceful environment in which to chill quietly or are ready to really get to know the flowers, bushes, and trees of Texas. If you love it too, consider volunteering here, or support the center with an annual membership. Backstory: Lady Bird Johnson Her nurse declared that Claudia Alta Taylor, born in Karnack, Texas, in 1912, was “as pretty as a ladybird,” and the nickname stuck. The East Texas native graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor’s degree in art and was studying to be a reporter when she met rising politician Lyndon Johnson. She used her status as first lady to fight for women’s rights and was a pioneering environmentalist, advocating for open spaces and greenbelts as an integral part of urbanization. Lady Bird was galvanized by her love of the natural world, and the results of her lifelong work can be seen not just in the roadside wildflower displays that are such a feature of springtime in Texas, but also in city parks all over the country. She planted the seed in Ann Butler’s mind for the transformation of the banks of the Colorado in Austin (see “Lady Bird Lake Boardwalks,” page 110). Her ideas have gone mainstream in the world of urban planning, and the city has many fine examples (most covered in this book) of green spaces that provide delight and respite for humans, and homes for plants and animals. The wildflower center, which she opened in 1982 and which moved from East Austin to this location in 1995, is a living memorial to this remarkable human being whose ideas are still inspiring people to make the world better.

By FAR, the best book in his Great Lives series. I've read them all several times. The reason Moses is the best, is the lessons, insights, and life applications that Chuck draws out of a story that you've likely heard and read several times. If you haven't read this book, I would highly recommend it, although any of the Great Lives books are good to revisit for personal study, sermons, or Bible study material.My favorite part was Chapter 5: "The Desert: School of Self-Discovery." In this chapter, Chuck highlights how we all go through desert seasons where God seeks to train us up, similar to Moses 40 years in the wilderness of Midian and Mt. Sinai. Chuck endearingly calls this God's "Wilderness University" or "Desert University," and describes the 4 "majors" that God provides in his curriculum, as he trains up a man or woman of God. Chuck reuses these themes in ALL of his Great Lives series and applies them to David, Elijah, Esther, etc.The following "majors" or life lessons are:1) Obscurity- God uses obscurity to break down our pride/ego, remove our desire to "be in the limelight," and to be humble/willing to be used by Him2) Time/Waiting- God uses time to grow our patience and reliance on Him3) Solitude- God uses solitude, to give us time to reflect, remove busyness from our lives, and to develop our ability to stand for God, even when the "crowd" or others don't.4) Discomfort- God uses discomfort to develop our ability to tolerate hardship and "be content in all things" as Paul says in the New Testament.

I was interested in learning more about King David, but wanted something more like a "novel," than a heavy in-depth biography. I never seemed to find anything like that, but went with this one because of the author's reputation. Swindoll provides an entertaining account of the events in David's life, using scripture and also lively contemporary language. What I did not expect, but have enjoyed, is that he also draws parallels between David's actions and other Bible events, and also applies to modern life some lessons to be learned from David. I have found these digressions from a "just the facts, ma'am" approach to be interesting and, in some cases, thought-provoking. If, however, a reader would prefer a book that is strictly a biographical account of David's life, this may not be the best choice. I gave it 4 stars because occasionally the author gets a bit too preachy.

I've always admired Dr. Chuck Swindoll's radio ministry, as I believe he preaches the unadulterated Word of God. His Insights For Living are lessons I have carefully listened to and tried to apply to my own life. A while back, I recall him doing a series of radio programs on the life of King David, and I believe those programs resulted in him writing this book.I heartily recommend this book to those who desire a study of King David and his life and times. Swindoll takes his information directly from Kings and Chronicles, and considers the life of David from when he was a young boy tending his father's sheep, to an old man of 70, about to die. Swindoll tells King David's story and the lessons Christians can learn from the most written about person in the entire Old Testament. Swindoll is a list-maker, and in each chapter he provides a list of key ideas or lessons to be learned by King David's attitude or actions that are applicable to believers today. For example, what kind of mindset is required to face down a giant challenge, such as a Goliath? What does it mean to be "A man after God's own heart?" How can a man of faith commit adultery and then have a man murdered in order to steal his wife? What should our response be with our children rebel against us? These and many more questions are asked and answered in Swindoll's book.I am using this book as a nightly Bible study and I can hardly wait to get to bed to read another chapter. I have enjoyed this book so much that I will likely purchase the next book in his series on Biblical characters.I knew very little about King David before beginning this study, and as I come to the conlcusion of the book, I feel I know the general outlicne of David's life so much better, and have improved insights into his personality, his struggles, his moral failings, and his faith in his God. David's life is one of great contrasts. Since he is the most written about person in the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit must want us to learn about this Man of God, and learn how he failed and how he suceeded in his walk of faith.This is not a difficult book to read. Swindoll writes for the average reader, yet has insights and clarity that will benefit the church deacon or pastor. I most highly recommend this book as a great starting point to learn about the greatest King of Israel.konedog

Bought this book because I needed some more fluid info on David, more chronological for the retreat I was about to speak at. Wow! Every chapter ministered to my soul and spoke to me in such deep ways. You can almost read this like a devotional because swindoll puts little nuggets in every chapter that will challenge you in deep ways. This book is a keeper. You won't be seeing mine resold on amazon!

My parents named me "David" so I wanted to learn more about the life of the one God chose who was named David. It was a great book; good reading and well organized. Lots of scripture was used to describe David's life. I will probably buy some more in Chuck Swindoll's Bible character series.

From my earliest days of accepting Christ, I have loved Chuck Swindoll. His writing is so clear and the everyday application so practical. This book was no exception. Examining the life of David with application from every period of his life allowed me to feel that God can use anyone to accomplish his purposes.

I ordered this book, after sitting in for the Admin at church. There I read the first 3 chapters and was hooked. Swindoll writes as if he is talking with you in common, every day language so it is easy to understand and a joy to read the story. I love it so much that I ordered one for my Aunt to read with me. So, if you're looking for something great to read and love the Bible story of David, I'd say give this one a try.
